Stay Balanced

Maintaining your balance is important in every sport … cricket, baseball, surfing and even tenpin bowling, just to name a few, all require good balance to perform well.In golf, better balance throughout your swing ensures a solid hit. It also means you will always be in control of your swing and it won’t control you. A golfer in control always makes the game look very easy.

The key to being balanced during the swing needs to start with your set-up. I see too many club golfers address the ball with too much weight on their heels. Their knees are usually not flexed enough and once they start the backswing they are fighting to maintain their balance.

Look at Sergio Garcia here. His knees are flexed so his weight is more over the balls of each foot (pic 1). Think of a batsmen in cricket waiting for the bowler to deliver the ball – their knees are flexed and the weight is over the balls of their feet. The same can be said for a surfer, a downhill skier or a baseball pitcher. All have flexed knees and the balance point is over the balls of the feet.

When you have established a balanced position at address it is far easier to make a good backswing and pass at the ball. Even at impact, as you can see with Garcia (pic 2), his weight is moving forward into his left side but remains over the ball of that foot, despite the fact his left leg has straightened as his left hip has cleared the hitting zone.
